It’s the month of June and that means Toronto Pride is well underway! The city is alive with rainbow colours, love and excitement for four amazing weeks of incredible programming to celebrate the LGBTQ2S+ community.

What is Pride Toronto?

Every year, during the month of June, the city of Toronto hosts Pride, an annual event to celebrate the LGBTQ2S+ community. As one of the largest gay pride festivals in existence, Pride Toronto is a festival featuring live performances, DJs, Dyke March, Trans March and the renowned Pride Parade that makes its way down Yonge Street. Estimates range from 500,000 to 1 million people that attend the Pride events during the month of June, with over 100,000 attending the Pride Parade alone. Pride is more than a festival, it’s an opportunity for communities and allies to come together and learn, support, and celebrate the achievements and diversity of the LGBTQ2S+ community!

When is Pride Toronto?

Thursday June 1 – Friday June 30, 2023

History of Pride Toronto: Toronto’s Pride celebration has evolved from a small group of activists dating back to the 1970s to the city-wide celebration it is today. Starting out as a ”Gay Day Picnic” in support of the gay liberation movement, Pride quickly grew from hundreds to thousands celebrating and supporting the gay community across the city. And in 1991, the City of Toronto officially recognized Pride Day. Since then, over a million people have been known to take part in Toronto Pride every year. What was originally observed over a single day is now a month-long celebration. In 2021, Pride events were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the festival was back to its full form in 2022. The festivities continue in 2023 with the theme for this year’s pride being “Here, There, and Everywhere.” To learn more about the history of Pride Toronto, visit https://www.pridetoronto.com/about/history/
